Uploading content to the Workshop
How to upload scripts, user notes, backgrounds, and more, to the Steam Workshop.
Introduction
So y'all have made some cool custom content, and you lot desire to share it on the Steam Workshop. How do you become nigh this? How does the uploader work?
This guide is here to guide yous through the steps of what "addons" are, and how it actually works.
Packages
A package as defined by Nimble Writer is essentially a zip file. When Nimble Author starts, it will look for a folder named "Packages" first. If it exists, it volition notice all naught files within of that binder and - if they are valid zip files - load every file and mount them so that files inside of it can be used as if they were available from the root directory of the application.
For example, if Nimble Writer wants to list all files in Themes/Backgrounds in order to brand the list of backgrounds available in the settings dialog, it will first become over the concrete files (which is files on disk, exterior of packages) and list them, but as well adds mounted files from packages to this list, for example:
- Themes/Backgrounds/SkyBlue.png
- Themes/Backgrounds/Pink.png
- Themes/Backgrounds/Calorie-free.png
- Themes/Backgrounds/Khaki.png
- Themes/Backgrounds/Nighttime.png
- Packages/TalosPrinciple.naught/Themes/Backgrounds/Talos_Wallpaper07.jpg
- Packages/TalosPrinciple.cipher/Themes/Backgrounds/Talos_Wallpaper08.jpg
The same goes for when Nimble Author tries to open a file. So in the instance higher up, if you select Talos_Wallpaper07.jpg as your background, it will employ the file in the package instead of a file on deejay.
There are some rules y'all should recollect with this organization, though:
- If there is both a physical file and a file in a parcel, the concrete file will be used.
- If there are multiple packages that define the aforementioned file, the last loaded package volition exist used.
- Packages are loaded in alphabetical guild for packages in the Packages folder.
- Packages are loaded in society of Steam Workshop subscription in the case of Workshop packages.
Packages from Steam Workshop are loaded from your Steam user data directory, so that is exterior of the Packages binder. This is too why the order of loading is dissimilar for these.
Creating a parcel
Below will be a few sections on creating packages, where I give a few examples on how to create packages for:
- Themes
- Custom note models
- Addons (Lua scripts)
Creating a package: Themes
Creating themes is probably the easiest, because at that place'due south a button in the settings dialog for quickly packaging upwards entire themes into a zip file, set up to exist uploaded to the Steam Workshop.
Therefore, the easiest way to create packages for themes is to use the "Save theme" push:
You volition meet the following dialog. Make sure you check "Prompt to save as a zip file" in guild to automatically create a packet for the Steam Workshop:
When you click Save, it will prompt y'all were to save the json file for your theme commencement. Simply salvage this file inside of your Themes binder. Next, it will inquire yous were yous want to save the zip file. This can be anywhere! And so relieve information technology somewhere yous'll recall.
You can at present directly open the Steam Workshop Uploader dialog and upload your detail to the Workshop. Or - if y'all'd like - yous can check out the contents of the zip file in your favorite zip packaging plan:
In the above picture, notice that there'south a Themes folder, and within of that folder there is a Default binder and your theme'southward json file.
Instead of using the settings dialog to save the theme'due south aught file, you could've also created it yourself. In the next department, we'll brand a package for custom notation models ourselves.
Creating a package: Custom note models
Allow'due south say you have created a custom notation model. In that location'due south no easy push to save these equally a zip file. To upload these to the workshop, you'll have to create a parcel manually. To practise so, create a zip file anywhere: (Note: not a Rar file!)
Inside of this zip file, you beginning desire to create a folder called NoteModels, just like there is a NoteModels folder in the application directory.
Now drag your files inside of that folder, and the package is done. Set to be submitted to the Steam Workshop.
Creating a parcel: Addons
Creating packages for addons is the aforementioned every bit creating packages for custom notation models, except there's only a few unlike files involved, depending on how complex your addon is.
Essentially all you have to do is create a zip file with the post-obit structure:
MyAwesomeAddon.zero \---Addons \---awesome init.lua awesome.json
Uploading to the Steam Workshop
To upload your newly created package to the Steam Workshop, click the addons button and select Steam Workshop Uploader:
Next, navigate to your created package (zip file), find a nice epitome for your item, and type in your Workshop detail details, and click on Upload.
You're washed!
You need to sign in or create an account to do that.
